AI Hardware Thefts Escalate with “Bump-and-Run” Tactics in California

Organized cargo thieves in California have adopted a more aggressive approach to steal high-value AI and data-center hardware. In multiple recent incidents, criminals deliberately rammed private security escort vehicles protecting technology shipments, then used compromised drivers to drive the loads away.



According to industry investigators and reporting from late summer 2026, at least two documented cases involved intentional collisions designed to disable or separate the escorts. Known reported losses of data-center freight have climbed past $110 million since early June, with individual loads valued between $2 million and $38 million.

These shipments typically move from Silicon Valley southward and contain networking equipment, server components, optical transceivers, and related hardware that can command premium prices on secondary and overseas markets. The tactic relies on two key elements: the ability to compromise or recruit drivers, and gaps in real-time carrier verification that allow fraudulent or high-risk operators onto the load.
